VSEPR confusion

Postby BriannaParrington-1B » Sun May 27, 2018 10:32 pm

Can someone explain to me the concept of VSEPR?

Lewis structure simply gives us the basics of valence electrons, ie how many pairs there are, how many single double or triple bonds, how many electrons in general. VSEPR actually tells you the angle of the shapes in a 3-D perspective. All electrons wish to be as far away from each other as possible while maintaing their positions within orbitals, which give rise to the shapes we saw in the models in class.

VSEPR is how we predict the geometry of molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms. It helps us get a 3-D picture of what molecules actually look like.

Is the VSEPR model connected to determining sigma and pi bonds? If so, how?

Hello --
VSEPR Model stands for Valence-Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion Model. For each molecule, this molecule illustrates the location of bonding electrons and lone pairs with respect to the central atom. Bonding pair electrons and lone pair electrons repel each other, so the VSEPR Model takes this into account. Basically, the VSEPR Model is used to predict the geometric shape of the molecule using the location of the electrons.
Hope this helps!

A lewis structure just shows us how many valence electrons there are and what kind of bonds are used whereas the VSEPR model gives the actual shape of the valence electrons in a molecule. The shape is determined by the repulsion of the electrons which can create various shapes such as linear, tetrahedral, octahedral, etc.

What is the VSPER formula?

^^ Valence shell electron pair repulsion (VSEPR) theory is a model used in chemistry to predict the geometry of individual molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms. The VSEPR formula is just the structure.

To add on to what others said, VSEPR is used as a model in chemistry to predict the geometry of individual molecules from the number of electron pairs surrounding their central atoms.
