4.3 Structure and Shape

Postby vivianndo_1L » Fri Jun 01, 2018 10:00 am

When it asks us to draw the structure of molecules so that we can determine its molecular shape, do we draw it as a ball-and-stick diagram or do we use a Lewis structure? I know the answer in the back of the book is in the form of a Lewis diagram but I just wanted to clarify.

You draw the Lewis structure still!

I think that it's hard to find the molecular shape without drawing out the Lewis diagram, for example some molecules may have bond angles and lone pairs, and you wouldn't know the shape without drawing these out.

It is generally better to draw the Lewis structures because not only do you see the bond angles and the amount of electrons bonded to the central atom. Also, it is a lot easier to see the regions of electron density around the central atoms to determine what shape compound it takes.

I hope this helps. Please correct me if I am wrong in certain places.

I am seriously confused on 4.3 from the textbook. The answer key states that HCN is a liner shape, but C forms 4 bonds total, 3 with N and 1 with H. This means there are four regions of electron density, correct? And that means it should be a tetrahedral shape?
