Bond Angles

Postby Sunjum Singh 1I » Fri Jun 01, 2018 1:19 pm

When it comes to determining bond angles for molecules, do we need to only know the main bond angles associated with the molecular shapes such as 120 or 109.5? Or are we going to need to remember the special cases Lavelle talked about in lecture like 104.5?

I'm pretty sure we're not going to be expected to know the exceptions from repulsion (was told this in discussion), but we do need to know the main bond angles of each shape.

We just need to know the main bond angles associated with molecular shapes for the test.

We should know the main bond angles for each structure.

We don't need to remember the special cases just the main ones.

It would also be helpful to consider the repulsion between lone pairs and bonds. With the Lewis structure and the shape known, you can use lone-lone > lone-bond > bond-bond to help with determining bond angle.

For the final you should just remember the common bond angles and not the special cases bonds. You are welcome to review them but do not try to memorize them.

For the final we should know the main bond angles for their structures.
