formal charge and VSEPR

Postby Jaquelinne Rodriguez-Lopez 1L » Sat Jun 02, 2018 5:33 pm

when figuring molecular shape, I've noticed that the textbook has Lewis structures that do not have the lowest formal charge. I know it does not matter as much because we can still figure out the shape. For the final do we draw the Lewis structure according to formal charge before figuring VSEPR shape?

Yes, I believe the best habit to keep in mind is to draw the lewis structure with the lowest formal charge before applying VSEPR

It's better to do it this way... but does anybody know if it's a necessity to be correct?

This is somewhat unrelated, but does VSEPR just refer to the notation? Like AXE4?

VSEPR refers to the notation and also the way of finding the molecular shape from the Lewis structure.

yes, AXE is the VSEPR formula

In determining formal charge, I know it is #valence electrons - #bonds and #lp. But, if there is one set of lone pairs (2 electrons, one Lone pair) would I just subtract 1 ? Or because there are two electrons, would I subtract two?

You would subtract one.

VESPR is used to predict molecular geometry using valence shell electrons
