Naming Structures

Is there an easy trick to memorizing the names of molecular structures?

I do not think we will need to know how to name molecular structures for the final, however I could be wrong.

Did you mean with the VSEPR model? If so, I do not think there is a trick but many are self-explanatory just by looking at the shape and the amount of bonds/lone pairs. (i.e. angular is similar to linear but slightly bent, T-shaped looks like a "T")

Yeah for the VSEPR model the best way is just to memorize the shapes and know the difference between the ones with lone pairs and how that changes the angle and subsequently the shape. Make a chart with all of the VSEPR formulas and the shapes and angles and that should help.

you could either memorize the VSEPR formulas and their shapes or you could draw the lewis structure and figure out the shape based on its number of bonds and lone pairs.

I don't think we have to know this for the final. But the best way for the VESPR formulas and their shapes.

probably just to familiarize yourself with the names and their corresponding shapes

Also, just to be clear, when asked to name the VSEPR shape of a molecule, that would not be the same as asking to name the molecular shape of a molecule? *This would revolve around not counting in the lone pairs for the molecular shape. Also, which one of these two are we most likely to be asked to find?
