HW 4.19

Predict the shapes and estimate the bond angles of (b) (CH3)2Be

Why is the shape tetrahedral if there are no lone pairs and only two bonds on the central atom?

the overall compound is linear, but the 2 sub-compounds (CH3) are tetrahedral since the 3 H's and Be surround it

With bigger molecules like this one, it will often be asked what the shape is surrounding an individual atom such as one of the Carbons in the atom. In this case you would say tetrahedral because there are 4 atoms around the central atom with no lone pairs.

Since there are more than one "central" atoms in this molecule, the shape around one of these atoms can be determined the same way as if it were just a single compound with one central atom
