My TA gave us a helpful chart:
Regions of e- density e- arrangement
-------------------------------------------------------------
2 linear
3 trigonal planar
4 tetrahedral
5 trigonal bipyramidal
6 octahedral
And also remember the VSEPR formula: AXE
A= central atom
X= number of bound atoms
E= number of lone pairs

Personally I have found the most success in determining shape through the VSEPR formula. I have associated each individual formula with its corresponding shape, so if you learn similarly then I would suggest this.

For VSEPR, when you're trying to determine the shape based off of the # of regions of electron density, would you count a double bond as ONE region of electron density or TWO regions of electron density? And would you only count the number of regions of electron densities around the central atom to determine shape?

Hi Jacy,
you would count double bonds as one region of electron density.
When you are doing VSEPR we always look at the center atom; the electron densities (X&E-mentioned previously in this discussion) around the central atom does determine the electronic geometry(eg. linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, octahedral)
Then there is Molecular geometry which is just the number of atoms that are bonded not the LONE PAIRS, which determine the angle structure(eg. bent, seesaw, trigonal, t-shape etc.)
