So it's to my understanding that the bond pairs have to be placed the furthest from each other, but I'm still confused on where exactly to place the lone pair? I remember hearing something about 90 degrees...
Are you talking about when trying to determine shape? If so I believe it usually appears on the central atom. At least that is what I have seen in most examples. So like if you are drawing VSEPR for SF(4), there would be two 90 degree lone pair bonding pair repulsions pushing the other fluorines away. This would look like the see-saw shape.
