Help on HW#4.9

Postby BriannaParrington-1B » Sun Jun 10, 2018 1:41 pm

For 4.9 I counted that the total of valence electrons of ICL3 was 28 electrons. When I drew the Lewis structure in order to figure out the molecular shape, I could only fit 26 electrons around all of the atoms when completing all of their octets. Therefore, I am assuming that Iodine has an expanded octet. Is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. It would also be T-shaped because of the arrangement of the 2 lone pairs. (:

Yes! A lot of the middle block elements have expanded octets!

Yes, since iodine is beyond the 3p orbital it can and will form an expanded octet.
