Molecular Shape of I3-

Postby Sierra Cheslick 2B » Sun Nov 11, 2018 2:25 pm

Why is the molecular shape of I3- described as linear with bond angles of 180 degrees when the central iodine atom has 3 lone pairs in addition to the two bonds? Why isn't it trigonal bipyramidal?

I wasn't sure of this question either so as I was looking up different information I found this question was asked in an older chemistry community post! Here's the link :)
