Bond Angles
Will we ever be asked to find the bond angles of a molecular structure? And if so, how would we go about doing that?

I'm am pretty sure we will. Bond angles can be determined after finding the molecular structure of an atom. Certain structures have certain angles. For example, a tetrahedral structure will always have bond angles of ~109.5 degrees and a square planar structure will always have bind angles of 90 degrees. First, you would need to find the structure of a molecule then learn their specific bond angles, once you start drawing them you will be able to determine them without memorizing them.

In the lecture outlines, it is mentioned on how we need to know " lone pairs are more likely to found in certain locations around a central atom and
how and why they affect the bond angles in a molecule, cation, or anion;" so it is not out of the question that we may need to know bond angles. You would have to ask Dr. Lavelle or your TA about it. Nevertheless, in order to find bond angles, you would need to know the VSEPR model. The model has associated bond angles that we may need to memorize, but remember that these values are theoretical so experiments can show different bond angles. I hope this clears up some confusion.

Knowing bond angles is pretty much a matter of memorization. We'll be going over plenty of examples in class and be exposed to all the molecular geometries within the VSEPR model and their appropriate bond angles.

Bond angles are determined by the shape of the molecule. For example BF3 is a trigonal planar shape so therefore all of the B-F angles are 120 degrees.

As a follow up question: Do we need to know how to figure out the bond angles with lone pairs attached to the central atom? I know that there are pretty simple bond angles that we can memorize, like 180 degrees or 109.5, but I was wondering how that changes once there is a central atom with a lone pair for VSEPR.

@joanneyseung22 If there are lone pairs on the central atom, it will want to take up more space. Therefore, the bonded atoms will be condensed away from the lone pairs. Therefore, the bond angle will be slightly less than the standard bond angles of the molecular shape.

Determine the VSEPR model for each individual atom and then determine what the bond angle would be based off of the model.

Using the VSEPR model, you will be expected to list the bond angle of a molecule in relation to its central atom.
