Drawing shape based off of lewis structure

Postby Isabel Bellon 4F » Wed Nov 14, 2018 3:21 pm

For question 2E.3 part b, the book incorporates the shape of the molecule into the lewis structure by drawing the wedges. And I understand that we are not expected to draw the 3D model, but are we supposed to know how to draw the wedges? And if so, how do we know which atoms are positioned in the front or back?

We don't need to know how to draw wedge and dash notation. We just need to understand that its a representation of the molecule's shape in 3D space. And it doesn't really matter where the atoms go I think

I believe we don't need to be able to draw the wedge and shape model, and I dont think which atom goes to the front/back matters as long as their positions don't affect the angle/structure of the molecule.

While we don't need to know how to draw the wedge and dash projections, they are helpful for understanding the 3-D visual of various molecular shapes since the lewis structures aren't necessarily accurate in that sense.
