Will we have to calculate bond angles?
Regarding bond angles, is that something we will ever be asked to calculate, or do we just remember them?

I believe that we should know which angles are associated with the types of shapes. I'm not sure that we will necessarily be calculating them, I think that knowing them will be very helpful.

I think we would need to memorize the bond angles of molecules without lone pairs on the central atom. Professor Lavelle said that we do not need to memorize the bond angles for the molecular shapes with lone pairs on the central atoms. But just that the lone pairs have an effect on the bond angles.
For example, trigonal pyramidal has bond angles that are less than 109.5. We do not need to know the specific angle.

Yeah I think we just need to know what angles are affiliated with the different shapes, but that should be feasible through thinking about electron pair repulsion.

we will need to know only generic ones like octahedral is 90 degrees but nothing too specific like how NH3 is 107.5

Also it is important to just understand how lone pairs affect the bond angles of shapes like triginal pyramidal for example making the bond angle less than 109.5 degrees.

I think we have to know the bond angles of each shape and basically how those angles are derived. For instance, you have to know that by adding lone pairs, the angles will be affected and will generally become smaller.

During one of the TA sessions I attended, he said all we really need to know is the general angles like 90, 120, and 109.5, and how lone pairs can either increase or decrease those angles.

I think as long as you remember the general angles (like 109.5) then you can say how other shapes are affected by the relative repulsion strength of lone pair-lone pair, lone pair-bonding pair, and bonding pair-bonding pair.
