I am currently trying to memorize all the VSPER models from the chart from the text book. What would be the best way to memorize all the information about the angles and what shapes belong with what?
I feel like if you know the angles of the models or at least know the names, it is easier to visualize the shape just from that info alone. If you take, for example, square planar...the angles are 90 degrees and a model being "planar" implies it can only lie on one "plane"/be flat. If you get a grasp on trigonal planar, trigonal pyramidal, and tetrahedral, the more difficult models like trigonal bipyramidal and pentagonal bipyramidal become easier to visualize. Think about the shapes and what angles form those shapes.
I go by memorizing the total species bound to the central atom meaning all lone pairs and atoms bound to the CENTRAL ATOM. Then determine how many atoms are bound and how many lone pairs are bound and from that determine the shape and bond angles.
