We mentioned in class that the repulsion of lone pair electrons is greaer than bonding electrons, but why is this true?

I believe the reason is that lone pairs occupy more space, in other words they are more diffused. This causes them to push the other atoms closer together.

Lone pairs remain closer to the central atom because they are not being pulled by another atom into a central bonding region and occupy a slightly more diffuse space. This icreased penetration by the lone pair makes it a better repeller (like how internal, non valence electrons are better at shielding and thus repelling valence electrons).

Furthermore lone pairs occupy more space than bonding pairs, which are stuck between the pull of central and outer atom. To accommodate the lone pair, bonding pairs have to be pushed slightly further away from the lone pair.
