Triple Bonds

Postby Manya Kidambi 3I » Sat Nov 17, 2018 3:17 pm

Why is it that triple bonds have 1 sigma and two pi bonds?

A sigma bond is an end to end overlap and so once a sigma bond is formed the molecule is unable to make a second sigma bond because there is no way to orient the molecule that would allow for another end to end overlap. Therefore the second and third bond that are made in a triple bond have to be side to side because of the orientation of the molecule which is what a pi bond is.

A sigma bond is always the first bond between two atoms, while pi bonds are always the second
