Drawing Molecules

Postby Olivia L 4E » Sun Nov 18, 2018 2:40 pm

When and if we are asked to draw out molecule in their correct molecular shape, it has to be in 3-D right? My concern is that the 3-D figure will look wrong if we draw it poorly.

I'm pretty sure for the test we will only be asked to draw the lewis structure of a molecule and then name the shape (and know the angles), not actually draw the three-dimensional shape!

Yeah, I believe we are expected to draw the 2-D diagram and then explain the 3-D model conceptually.

in lecture i think he said he would make sure that we wouldn't have to worry about drawing the 3d versions of the shapes since they can be difficult to draw , im not sure how we would show the shapes though, maybe just the 2d version

Im pretty sure on the test we are supposed to draw out the 2D lewis structure with the dotted line or filled in triangle to represent the 3D shape. We also need to draw the lone pair in the correct place so the shape of the molecule is correct.

You need to know Lewis structures, but be able to tell us the proper VSEPR structure if we ask.
