electron arrangement and molecular geometry

Postby davidryan3f » Sun Nov 25, 2018 4:35 pm

What I the difference between electron arrangement and molecular geometry? I get that molecular geometry is a more specific description of the atom but Im not sure the difference between the two terms.

Electron arrangement is the arrangement of electrons around the central atoms. So for example if an atom has two bonded pairs and two lone pair electrons, the electron geometry is tetrahedral. The molecular geometry is arrangement of the atoms around the central atom. While this does take into account the lone pairs, its name is determined by the molecular bonds. So in the example above with two lone pair and two bonded pairs, the molecular geometry would be linear.
