Sigma and pi bonds

Postby Linh Vo 2J » Sun Nov 25, 2018 9:32 pm

What is the reason why sigma bonds are stronger than pi bonds?

Pi bonds are usually weaker than sigma bonds because the orbital paths are parallel so there is much less overlap between the p-orbitals.

The greater the overlap, the higher probability the valence e- in between the nuclei which means stronger and shorter bonds.

Can someone explain what the electron density diagram with cylindrical symmetry around inter nuclear axis means? The diagram used in the lecture.

Could sigma and pi bonds have the same electron configuration?
