Molecular Shape

Postby Nadeen 3D » Sun Nov 25, 2018 11:53 pm

I was wondering if formal charge matters when drawing out the molecular shape or is it only for the Lewis structure?

It does matter. It helps us know the direction of the flow of electrons.

When looking at molecular shape, we are mainly looking at regions of electron density and atoms in lone pairs. The charges are used primarily in drawing lewis structures (which we do before looking at shape) so we can then figure out the regions of electron density and what the shape of the structure may be

I think you should use the formal charge when dealing with Lewis structures so you don't loose the habit.

Yes you should continue to use formal charge, in order to draw the favored Lewis Structure, and in doing so it will help you correctly identify its shape based on lone pairs and they way the atoms are bonded
