The answer key has the "ion" separate from the compound. For example, for ammonium chloride, NH4 is in brackets and outside of the brackets is the Cl- ion, can someone please explain this to me, thank you!

I believe when typically drawing lewis structures for ionic compounds, you include the ions in brackets to distinguish them from covalent compounds.

When drawing Lewis structures for ionic compounds, you draw the separate ions in their own brackets to denote the "donating" and "receiving" of electrons between the two.
