Polar vs. Non-polar

Postby Nadeen 3D » Tue Nov 27, 2018 7:17 pm

Are we able to distinguish a molecule polar or non-polar if there is an ion? Because when I was doing practice problems, when distinguishing polarity a lot of the answers said n/a. So does that mean we do not know whether the molecule is polar vs. nonpolar?

Just think about the net dipoles and whether they cancel. You have to take in account the shape of the molecule.

When deciding whether a molecule is polar or nonpolar you must look at the shape to see the dipoles. If there are no dipoles, then it is nonpolar or if the dipoles cancel out then it is nonpolar. If the dipoles are uneven (large difference in electronegativity) then the molecule is polar.

A good trick to distinguish polar and no polar is by drawing a Lewis structure and using the following rules.
1.It is non polar if there are no lone pairs and if all the attached structures are the same.

How would you find the dipoles in this case ?

If you were to draw the Lewis structure then you would be able to tell which molecules are polar or not

Thank you for the information.
