I might have missed this in lecture, but will we be expected to come up with a chemical formula based on the element's name?

Yes, we will most likely be tested on that during the final. It's also a part of the homework questions so it would be good to know how to do it.

is there a step by step process for figuring out the order of the elements in the formula based on the name? or generally if the brackets are right, could the metal go before or after the ligand?

There's a page in the textbook that gives you a pretty comprehensive step by step of the process! In the 6th edition it's on page 741. I would also recommend watching some youtube videos on it, if you need some walk through of examples.

For coordination compounds the formula from name typically looks something like this:
_cation_[transition metal_(first ligand)__(second ligand)]__anion__

Just make sure you organize the ligands (first, second,...) alphabetically.

An example would be diamminedichloroplatinum(IV) chloride:
[Pt(NH3)2Cl2]Cl2

There are no cations before the coordination complex, then the brackets denote the coordination complex, starting with the transition metal followed by the ligands organized alphabetically (ammine then chloro). Outside the brackets to the right is the anion chloride, which is outside the brackets since it won't be attached to the central transition metal.
