Can someone explain the difference between sigma and pi bonds in terms of their geometry and nodal planes?

A sigma bond results from the an end-to-end overlap of atomic orbitals that forms a molecular orbital. Its shared electron density is directly between the bonding atoms and the electron density is continuous from one atom to the other. According to the textbook, sigma bond has no nodal planes containing the internuclear axis since is the same in all directions along the axis of the bond.

A pi bond results from a side-to-side overlap of atomic orbitals on a plane that is perpendicular to a line that connects the nuclei of the bonding atoms. The bonding electron density lies "above and below" the plane of the nuclei of the atoms in the bond. A pi bond has one nodal plane containing the internuclear axis.

A sigma bond is a direct overlap between two orbitals.
