2E.25 part a

Draw the Lewis structure and predict whether each of the following molecules is polar or non-polar?
a) CH2Cl2

For this one, correct me if I am wrong please but when I draw the Lewis structure out, C is the central atom. From here, I can either place the 2 Cl opposite each other on the axial position or the Cl and an H opposite from each other on the axial position. However, to my understanding, the 2nd structure would be polar and the 1st one would be nonpolar since they cancel each other out; while H and Cl won't cancel each other out? So my question is how do you know which one to draw to determine their polarity?

The lewis structure for CH2CL2 would be draw with the Cl atoms grouped together and the H atoms grouped together. I see what you mean, but considering the bonding atoms are different, I don't think they would be placed opposite of each other (i.e. one Cl on top and one Cl on the bottom) and their dipoles wouldn't cancel each other out, making the molecule polar.
