VSEPR notation

For NO3-, would the VSEPR notation be AX3 or AX4 and why?

AX3 because there are 3 atoms (3 oxygens) attached to the central atom (nitrogen)

The notation would be AX3 because there are three atoms attached to Nitrogen in the Lewis structure. The amount of bonds does not really matter, but the amount of atoms surrounding the central atom is relevant. The geometry is trigonal planar.

Single, double, and triple bonds are considered single regions of electron density in the VSEPR model, so even though there is a double bond between N and O, the VSEPR notation would still be AX3.

It is AX3 because there are three oxygen atoms attached to the central atom of nitrogen.

The formula would be AX3 because there is one central atom of N and three surrounding O with no lone pairs

A for the central atom. X for the bonded atoms. E for the lone pairs.

The formula would be AX3 because there are three regions of electron density surrounding the central atom. They are all bonded pairs of electrons, so the formula would include X3. If any of the regions of electron density included lone pairs of electrons, you would have to use the E part of the formula.

NO3- would have the notation AX3 because the central atom has 3 atoms bonded to it. If there are any lone pair e-, then the E part of the notation would have to be used.
