Repulsion Strength

Postby Nikita Patra 3J » Sun Nov 17, 2019 12:41 pm

What is the difference between the strength of repulsion among lone pair-lone pair and just a lone pair?

Lone pair-lone pair repulsion is the strongest kind of repulsion and I think what you're referring to as just lone pair repulsion is actually lone pair-atom repulsion which is the second strongest repulsion.

Repulsion between lone pairs > repulsion between a lone pair and a bonding pair> repulsion between bonding pairs

Because lone pairs are more loosely held, they have a stronger repelling effect than do electrons in bonds. Thus, lone pair-lone pair interactions have a stronger effect than do lone pair-bond or bond-bond interactions.

Lone Pair--Lone Pair > Lone Pair--Bonding > Bonding Pair--Bonding Pair
