Below are ball-and-stick models of two molecules. In each case, indicate whether there must be, maybe, or cannot be one or more lone pairs of electrons on the central atom.

Both molecules consist of 3 atoms. The first molecule has a bond angle of 120 degrees between the central atom and the other two. The second molecule has a 180 degrees bond angle.

The one with the bond angle as 120 degrees must have lone pairs. The one that is 180 degrees may have lone pairs.
