Test 2
When determining the molecular shape and bond angles do the Lewis structures have to be drawn as accurately as possible?
Re: Test 2
While the bond angles and shape do not have to be drawn correctly (because you can tell the shape based on bonding pairs / lone pairs), it would be extremely helpful to draw them as close as possible. If the question specifically asks for the lewis structure, then it does need to be drawn correctly.

Re: Test 2
He said that we will never be graded on drawing Lewis structures according to VSEPR model. All you have to do is write out the bond angle and shape and stuff.
Re: Test 2
I think just to be safe you should draw it as accurately as you can. However if the question asks you to name the molecular shape then that should be the top priority. I hope this helps!

Re: Test 2
When drawing the Lewis Dot structures I think it is important to make sure you have placed the correct amount of double bonds and single bonds and lone pairs around all of the atoms; however, I don't think it is important to make sure your drawing is depicting the correct angles of the bonds because that would be very hard to do. It is just important to write the correct angles and identify the shape.

By drawing the most stable lewis structure, you will be able to determine the correct shape.

Re: Test 2
If the most stable lewis structure is drawn, you will be able to properly determine the regions of electron density and the lone pairs which will then allow you to identify the correct VESPR shape

Re: Test 2
You must have the right type of bonds and number of lone pair electrons in your Lewis structure to get the right shape, and therefore, bond angles. However, because resonance is just a blend of all possible structures, you can get the right shape with just one resonance structure.

Re: Test 2
if you're not very sure on whether you can correctly visualize the molecule in your head then its safe to draw the lewis structure for an accurate VSEPR shape

This has probably already been said, but can someone list all the topics that will be covered on this upcoming test

Re: Test 2
Drawing the lewis structure can be really helpful if you're not completely sure and want to be safe!

Re: Test 2
Draw the most stable structure (formal charges in mind) in order to accurately predict the shape

Everything that he has covered after the Midterm up until the first slide he will show us in this Monday's lecture will be on the test.

Re: Test 2
The double/single bonds doesn't matter as much, the lewis structure just helps you figure out where the lone pairs are and how the bound atoms are distributed.

Re: Test 2
When drawing the Lewis structures do we have to use the dashed lines and filled in lines to demonstrate which plane the atoms are on? Or is that like a separate thing from Lewis Structures?

Re: Test 2
Technically, the shape does not matter in a lewis structure, although Lavelle said drawing them symmetrically (or now similar to VSEPR model) would help to visualize the molecule.
Re: Test 2
Draw the most stable Lewis structure (as we were required to do before) and determine the molecular shape and bond angle for it.
