What happens (according to upperclassmen) is that after the final is scored, the grading scale is adjusted so that the average grade in the class becomes a B or B- (depending on who you ask). Basically the "floor" for each grade is dropped by a set percentage, so you can only be helped and not harmed by the curve. At some point I heard it was a 4% curve typically, but take that with a grain of salt.
