Drawing molecules

Postby 605136321 » Sun Nov 17, 2019 9:59 pm

Are we going to have to draw out the molecules?

I think we'll be asked to draw the lowest energy Lewis structure and then name the shape and what the bond angles are.

It would be a good idea to know how to draw the lewis structures (obviously) and just generally know how to draw the 3D versions; however, I recall Dr. Lavelle saying we won't need to draw them on the test.

While it might not be necessary to draw the molecules, it might be helpful in determining the shape and bond angles of the molecule.

I think it'd probably be best to learn how to draw the molecules structure just in case- even if it's not on the test, it might be helpful on problems where to visualizing the structures to figure out the bond angles

Does it matter in what order we draw the atoms in the molecule? I forget what Dr. Lavelle said about structuring our drawing, although I know he said we need to know how to identify the molecules.

You should know the shape of the compound and it relative to the charges of the atoms.

While you may have to draw a Lewis Structure, you will not need to draw the molecule's VSEPR model. You will just need to know the shape and electron geometry.

We would only need to draw the lewis structures, not the 3D model.

I don not think that we will be ask to draw the 3D models but we should definitely know their shapes, names, and angles between the bonds in each structure.

We do not need to know how to draw the 3D models with the bold and dashed lines. We just need to draw Lewis structures and know the shapes.

We should know how to draw the most stable Lewis structure and then identify dipoles within the molecule. Using the dipoles we then know the repulsion and shape of the molecule and need to be able to identify it based on that image. It’s also good to be able to identify the type of intermolecular forces present in that molecule.

I think you have to draw to figure out what shape it would be, but i don't think we are being graded on the shape we draw judging by the fact that he told us we don't need to know how to draw the 3D shape.
