Bond Angles

Will we have to memorize all the bond angles for each of the shapes? If so, does anyone know a quick and easy way because I keep mixing them up?

I think we will have to memorize the basic ones.

My TA told us that we should try to memorize them all in case they appear on the test. He suggested to make flash cards for them and practice as much as we can.

We got to memorize the basic angles like 90, 120, and 180 and we should be able to predict if they are greater than or less than these angles. We don’t need to know the unique ones. I just imagine what the molecule looks like in a 3D setting based on the name of the shape.

This chart from step up was really helpful for me. Besides that, I think if you just understand the shapes, you'll probably be able to figure out the angles just by dividing 360 by the number of bonds.

yes know the basic ones but familiarizing yourself with all of them won’t hurt.

I would say memorize all the basic ones. There are a few that he told us we don't need to know due to the fact that it varies per molecule (i believe they were the ones with lone pairs). So i would memorize all of the ones without lone pair and have a good understanding of how to predict the ones with lone pairs.

I think just memorize the basic ones, but also understanding it conceptually on whether it will be greater than or less than the basic ones will help as well!
