2E.13 part a

For part A in question 13 of 2E, I3- has a bond angle of 180 degrees even though it has 3 lone pairs on it. Why isn't its bond angle less than 180 degrees?

If a molecule has two bond pairs and 3 lone pairs (AX2E3) it is linear in shape and therefore has a bond angle of 180 degrees.

The atoms of an AX2E3 molecule would be most stable and experience the least repulsion in a 180 degree linear model.

Yes, the molecular shape of the molecule will be linear. The electron geometry is trigonal bipyramidal, but that actual bond angle will be 180 degrees because of the molecular shape.
