Hybridization

Postby Goyama_2A » Sun Nov 24, 2019 12:13 pm

What is the purpose of hybridization? Why does it occur?

Hybridization occurs when an atom uses both its s and p orbitals to bond with another atom. This creates an imbalance in energy levels so hybridization occurs to level out the energy as it combines these orbitals.

By allowing hybridization to occur, we are thus able to have a full octet when 2s and 2p orbitals hybridize together to an energy state in between s and p orbitals.

In addition to the s and p orbitals, the d orbitals can be used in hybridization as well.

Hybridization is based on the mixing of orbitals of the atom(any) to give hybrid orbitals. Hybrid orbitals can overlap with the hybrid/pure orbitals of other atoms to give sigma bonds

Hybridization makes it easier to see the different types of bonds that are present. It is also meant to show that the "fusing" of orbitals affects shapes and ability to bond.

hybridization gives an explanation or at least helps to explain a molecules structure when the valance bond theory fails to predict the structure correctly.

It is when an atom uses both its s and p orbitals to bond, in cases where the number of bonds exceeds the number available in the unhybridized state.
