When does one know when to apply cis or trans shape to their structure?

I think it all has to do with the structure of whatever the molecule is binding to. If the main molecule features groups that are close together, then the attaching molecule would probably need to be cis.

I don't think it would be applying a "cis" structure to a molecule..?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but you'd probably determine if a molecule had a cis or trans structure based off of clues of the molecule. If the molecule had a higher melting or boiling point, it'd probably cis. Likewise, if it had a lower one, it'd probably trans.

Cis and trans refers to the difference in the orientation of the elements around the central atom. If the elements are in the same side, it’s CIF and opposites of each other is trans. This is only applicable to certain chemicals though and this difference makes the chemical properties a lot different.

Cis & Trans relate to when the same molecule just has different bonding sites for outer elements. Trans is when they are diagonal and Cis is when they are on the same side. This is extremely important to biological compounds as it can totally change the function because shape is influenced. However, we do not know which side, so its your choice.

I think if this were to be on a test it would most likely ask you to identify if the molecule is cis or trans and the effect that would have on the bonding/function of the molecule.

At least one tests, applying cis and trans should be either given in the question itself if drawing the structure or identifiable based on the structures given.
