AXE formula

Is the E in the AXE the lone pairs on the central atom or all of the atoms?

The E of the VSEPER formula represents the number of lone pairs the central atom has.

E describes the # of lone pairs on the central atom. For example, SO2 consists of an S bonded to two O with double bonds. In addition, one lone pair (2 electrons) exists on S. Therefore, the formula would look like: AX2E

The E on the AXE is just the lone pairs on the central atom.

A represents the central atom, X represents the number of atoms bonded to the central atom and E represents the number of lone pairs on the central atom.

AXE formula is used only regarding a single atom as the central atom, you can't have two As, so it simplifies it for us so all the X and Es are directly attatched to the central atom
