In general, how do we determine polarity? I know this question is already posted but it really didn't help me.

two things are important: electronegativity and shape
things that may make a molecule non-polar:
symmetrical shape
no lone pairs present (this is only true for some; for example, XeF4 has 2 lone paris around the Xe but it has a square planar shape and is non-polar)
same atoms around the central atom (this is also only true for some; for instance, trans-dichloroethene has H and Cl atoms around C and yet the dipoles cancel out each other if you draw the structure or check the example on ur course reader....and so it is non-polar )..
Vice versa for things that may make a molecule polar

These are just the general things about how to figure out the polarity of a molecule.
The crucial part is to have the correct lewis structure first.
