memorizing VSEPR models

Postby Lisa Wang 3B » Sun Nov 22, 2020 9:07 pm

I have a hard time memorizing and visualizing trigonal pyramidal, seesaw, and trigonal bipyramidal. Can someone show me how you memorized them/what seems to work? Thanks so much!

I used quizlet by uploading a picture of each shape, along with the name and I just quiz myself.

In the textbook, in section 2E.1, there are images of all of the shapes next to each other which helps when differentiating between shapes. Hope this helps!

I mostly just stare at the vsepr sheet, trying to redraw the shapes or just memorizing the numbers helps like how many bonds and lone pairs are associated with the names and once you think you're familiar with them the sapling hw for this week has a lot of questions about naming the shapes so that's helpful too

I looked up diagrams online and look at those to try and memorize them.

When trying to memorize the VSEPR models, do we also need to memorize the angles since we cannot calculate them?

So should we be memorizing VSEPR models? Like for the final should we have all VSEPR models and bond angles memorized?

I don't think there is any better way to memorize the VSEPR models beyond simply memorizing the shapes of the models, but I think it might be helpful to think about how each name describes the structure of the bonding pairs and how the lone pairs contributes to each model's shape.

I recommend looking at the images for each of the shapes and trying to quiz yourself on them. I also like to draw them out myself during lectures from the models that Professor holds up since it helps me to remember and understand it if I have drawn it out myself but this is just what works for me! I hope this helps!!

I've been using quizlet to test myself on the models and its been extremely helpful.

I also really struggle with memorizing and visualizing some of the shapes. I've also heard testing yourself on Quizlet along with some useful diagrams can be really helpful.
