In the lecture we determined that XeF4 had 6 regions of electron density, but when determining its 3-d shape we ignore the two lone pairs on the opposite poles of XeF4 in order to get a square planar shape. Why do we ignore the lone pairs when determining its shape?

In the course reader, it states that because only four of six positions are occupies by atoms, the four atoms have a square planar shape. In my discussion class, we also were kind-of told that because the lone pairs are on opposites sides, the influence they have on bending the shape balance out and end up not bending the shape at all and thus just keeping on the square planar shape.
