Memorizing shapes based on general formula?

Postby Arya Adibi 1K » Sun Dec 06, 2020 11:28 am

For the final, is it good to try and memorize all the general formulas and what shape they correspond to? Is there going to be some guide of chart that tells us the shapes or do we need to memorize all of them?

Also, should we memorize the bond angles for each shape?

For shapes you should just know the shapes according to the number of electron densities. And yes to be safe know the bond angles as i doubt there will be a chart (in the lectures he mentioned you should be able to figure out which shape will have larger/smaller angles which can be deduced but its helpful to memorize them).

I think we should have them memorized, I would recommend flashcards for this because they can start to get a little confusing once you stray from the basic ones.

Yup, I think it's a good idea to memorize the shapes and the corresponding number of bonded pairs and lone pairs they each have. It's probably also helpful to memorize their corresponding bond angles.

My TA gave us this resource to memorize the vespr model. It was a very helpful resource and wanted to share.

it is a good idea to memorize them and what helped me was physically drawing out different examples myself.
