Bent vs Angular
If asked on the final to determine the molecular shape of NO2- or rather NH3, would the shape be bent, as we often say in H2O, or angular? Are the technically the same thing? Is one VESPR and the other molecular?

Re: Bent vs Angular
NO2- vsepr shape would be bent, and I believe angular just means the same thing.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Angular and Bent refer to the same molecular geometry and can be used interchangeably.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Yes, bent and angular are the same things. In the molecular geometry review, the diagram says bent or angular.
Re: Bent vs Angular
Bent and angular both describe the same shape but I mostly see lavelle use bent so I would use that

Re: Bent vs Angular
Hi! I believe that bent and angular are technical the same thing. They are just different names for the same shapes. There are two shapes that can be denoted as bent (or angular). These shapes involve a shape with one central atom, two bonding atoms, and one lone pair (VSPER formula of AX2E) and a shape with one central atom, two bonding atoms, and two lone pairs (VESPER formula of AX2E2).

Re: Bent vs Angular
Both bent and angular are the same, so you'd choose whichever one is given in the answer choices if it was a multiple choice format.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Hi! They are essentially the same thing. It's just personal preference in the nomenclature one uses.

Re: Bent vs Angular
I believe bent and angular are synonymous, although for this class we tend to use the term bent more often.
