Bent vs Angular
Are bent shape and angular shape the same thing? Lavelle uses bent, but the textbook uses angular...

Re: Bent vs Angular
Yes, these terms are the same thing. Both bent and angular are when there are 3 atoms with 1 or 2 lone pairs. The bond angle is 120 degrees or less, depending on how many lone pairs there are.

Re: Bent vs Angular
They are the same thing yes! One thing to keep in mind though is the difference in bond angle between a bent molecule with one lone pair such as SnCl2, and a bent molecule with two lone pairs such as H2O. If a bent molecule has one lone pair then it will have a bond angle of approximately 120 degrees, but if it is a bent molecule with two lone pairs, then it will have a bond angle of approximately 109.5 degrees.

Re: Bent vs Angular
In VSEPR theory, you can use both bent and angular synonymously to describe the same structure.

Re: Bent vs Angular
The terms bent and angular both refer to the same molecular shape in the VSEPR theory, so the terms can be used interchangeably!

Re: Bent vs Angular
Yes, I mostly use "bent," but they both mean the same thing (same shape) in the VSEPR theory.

Bent and angular are the same thing! They have 1-2 lone pairs within 3 atoms, and have an angle of 120 degree or less. Hope that helps!

Yes, they're the same! Bent and angular are just different names for the same shape.

Hi! Yes, they mean the same thing. They are just called angular in the textbook but they are used interchangeably.

Re: Bent vs Angular
I believe they are the same thing! a lot of textbooks usually call them angular bonds, but usually in lecture and in classes I have been in in the past professors will refer to them as bent. It's all just a preference thing :) Hope this helps!

Re: Bent vs Angular
Usually, the same thing but they refer to angular when its in the electron geometry of trig planar, and bent when its in the electron geometry of tetrahedral.

Yes! They are the same thing, and therefore interchangeable. Just don't be confused if you see one used and not the other.

Yup! They're the same thing. I think it just depends on who it is coming from. But, in my opinion, bent makes more sense.

Re: Bent vs Angular
You can use either bent or angular when describing a linear molecular structure with a lone pair.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Bent and angular are interchangeable. A shape is bent or angular due to stronger repulsion with a lone pair. A shape that has a steric number of 3 with two bonding pairs and 1 lone pair has stronger repulsion from the lone pair, making the bond angle less than 120 degrees. A shape with a steric number of 4 that has 2 bonding pairs and two lone pairs has stronger repulsion from the lone pair, making the bond angle less than 109 degrees.

Re: Bent vs Angular
They are interchangeable terms that mean two bonds and a lone pair on the central atom.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Yes, they're the same. They're both 3 atom molecules that have an angle around the central atom.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Yes, bent and angular are the same thing or the same molecular geometry in VSEPR theory. The bond angle for bent/angular is slightly less than 120 (<120).

Yes! the terms are used interchangeably but I think for this class bent is more acceptable.

Re: Bent vs Angular
Hi Carly,
The terms "bent" and "angular" can be used interchangeably. They both describe the shape of two atoms being "repelled downwards" by the lone pair of electrons from the center atom that it's attached to.

Bent and angular are two terms that mean the same thing. Examples of bent molecules include H2O and SO2.

They are the same thing and also just to add on the bond angles would be less than 120 degrees.

Re: Bent vs Angular
These two mean the same thing and are often listed together when in practice. I have seen in the textbook and in worksheets that if a structure is bent then it will often be named bent/angular. But it is not necessary to list both, either one works!
