lone pairs

When you are given a hexagonal diagram of a molecule, how can you determine the amount of lone pairs?

If you are referring to the representation of molecules like benzene as a hexagon with 3 double bonds, the lone pairs on atoms other than C and H are not drawn. If O makes 2 bonds, it has 2 lone pairs around it (same for sulfur). If N makes 3 bonds, it has 1 lone pair and the halogens each have 3 lone pairs around them if they make 1 bond.
