Errors with Hybridization

Postby Adrian Huang - 2I » Thu Nov 14, 2024 7:00 pm

I understand the overall concept of hybridization, but as I was thinking about hybridization, I had a question. Is the hybridization of molecules ever oversimplified when it comes to explaining the bonding in complex molecules, and are there examples where this leads to inaccurate ideas or misunderstandings about molecular behavior of complex molecules. I know it might be confusing, but it was just a thought.

Hi Adrian! This is an interesting question and I believe that there are cases in which hybridization oversimplifies the situation of molecules. For molecules with resonance structures like benzene, I think that the hybridization model does not fully account for the delocalization of electrons and rather considers them as more stagnant.
