Difference between hybrid orbitals and hybridization
Question: What is the difference between a question that asks for the hybrid orbitals used by an atom and a question that asks what the hybridization is of an atom?
Re: Difference between hybrid orbitals and hybridization
Answer: When you're asked the hybridization type, sp, sp2, sp3, etc are used. When asked hybrid orbitals, it refers to the specific orbitals of a certain atom, so quantum number n need to be put in the front.

Re: Difference between hybrid orbitals and hybridization
Just to clarify, This means that AsF3 would have a hybridization of sp3 and is in the hybrid orbital of 4sp3?

Re: Difference between hybrid orbitals and hybridization
The hybrid orbital specifies the principal quantum number (n) of the orbital.

Re: Difference between hybrid orbitals and hybridization
Just to add an additional question, what is the difference between hybridization schemes and hybridization? Or the difference between hybridization schemes and hybrid orbitals?
