bond angles between hybrid orbitals

Postby paula rizo 3E » Thu Dec 07, 2023 3:50 pm

can someone explain why the bond angle between two hybrid orbitals increases as the s-character of the hybrids is increased? thanks!

The bond angle between two hybrid orbitals increases as the s-charcater of the hybrids is increased because the more s-character in the hybrid orbital indicates a stronger electron repulsion results from this. Which causes the bonding electrons to migrate apart, increasing the bond angle.

p bonds hold electrons closer together, so as the s bond character increases, there will be a weaker pull between the electrons and the bond angle will increase.
