different types of hybridization

Postby Giselle Covarrubias 3B » Fri Dec 08, 2023 2:00 am

How does the hybridization contribute to a molecule's, C2H4, double-bond structure and its planar geometry?

Hey Giselle, I believe the carbon molecules in C2H4 is sp2 hybridized. Each carbon has two hydrogens bound by a single bond and a double bond between the two carbon bonds. The double bond is characterized by one sigma bond and one pi bond. The planar geometry is defined by the fact that each carbon has three electron groups, forming a trigonal planar orientation and contributing to the overall planar structure of the C2H4 molecule.
