Hybridization of molecules

Postby Shaniya Kerns 4D » Fri Dec 08, 2023 2:16 pm

When we are counting the bonds on an element in a molecule are we supposed to consider the lone pairs? And if so do we considering the lone pairs on the element the main element is connected to?

yes, you consider the lone pairs as a region of electron density, therefore when you are determining the hybridization of molecules if there are eg three bonds and one lone pair, there are four regions of electron density and thus the hybridization would be sp3.
