Why do we hybridize?

Postby Emily_Vilshtein_3B » Fri Oct 28, 2016 1:51 pm

Hello!
During lectures, I'm following how we are relating hybridizations to molecular shape, but I just don't understand why we hybridize separate orbitals to make them one. What is the purpose of hybridization?

Hybridized orbits are lower in energy and therefore more favorable then unhybridized orbitals. So hybridization occurs to create more stable compounds.

Hybrid orbitals tend to be more stable since they allow for a new molecule to have minimal electron repulsion, therefore creating stronger bonds.
