Just to clarify, in order to decipher the types of bond in a compound, you must first: draw lewis structure, then find out the shape, and then figure out the bonds?

You actually can figure out all the bonds after just drawing the lewis structure but if you automatically draw it in the shape you need then it is even easier. Once you have the bonds (single, double, triple) represented in the lewis structure you can just use those to determine how many sigma and pi bonds there are.
